Burns

An injury to the skin caused by heat, friction, radiation, chemicals, or electricity. Based on the extent of tissue damage, burns can be divided into three categories:

1st Degree

  • This involves the outer layer of the skin. Pain can be accompanied by redness and swelling. This is analogous to a sunburn.

2nd Degree

  • A burn involving more depth, past the outer layer of the skin. The skin can appear red or white with increased pain, swelling, and blister formation.

3rd Degree

  • This involves all the layers of the skin along with possible compromise of the underlying fat, muscle, and bone. A charred, black appearance is common.
